The Title VI - First Nations Program hosted an Indigenous Cultural Teaching Day at Howe Elementary Community School on April 17, 2026.

Students learned about Indigenous cultures throughout the school day, which culminated in an all school assembly. Students and staff were seen wearing cultural clothing and items throughout the day, like ribbon skirts.

Musical artist Wade Fernandez: Wiciwen Apis-Mahwaew (Walks With the Black Wolf) met with each grade level throughout the day. Fernandez is a citizen from the Menominee Nation. He has continually been sharing medicinal music, motivational messages and Menominee culture on stages and classrooms throughout the world for over 35 years. He is an international award winning musician/recording artist/songwriter/producer who performs with voice, guitar, Native American flute, and hand drum.

During the all-school assembly, artist Scott Hill revealed a mural design, which will be added to Howe Elementary Community School with assistance from students. Hill is a citizen of the Oneida Nation and a member of the Bear Clan. He is a multi-talented artist, specializing in painting, muralism, and sculpting with clay and stone.

After the mural design was revealed, music artist Shane Webster and his family shared cultural dances, regalia, and drumming and singing with students. Webster is also a parent and family member of students who attend Howe Elementary. He is a citizen of the Menominee and Oneida Nations and is from the Turtle Clan. He is the lead singer of the Wing Eagle Drum Group.

Students Mykelia of Washington Middle School and Mykel and MiiAmor of Howe Elementary Community School performed the cultural dances in colorful regalia.
